It’s no New York or San Francisco, but Boston’s rent prices are still up there. So, the closer you are to the center of the city and all the action, the less far your money gets you per month. And you know what they say…location, location, location.
I wasn’t as shocked as some might be from my hometown in the Midwest, since I was coming from New York. However, this time around, I really prioritized location and definitely downsized when I moved to Boston in January (great timing, I know).
My new humble (and I do really mean humble) abode is an oddly shaped 11′ x 13′ room. As for the rest of the apartment, it’s just a shared kitchen and bath, that’s it.
How can you make working out in a small space work?
Find a Designated Area
You don’t really need a lot of space, just enough to step forward, backward, side-to-side, as well as be able to do a plank.
I created mine in my (big surprise…) bedroom. I have a small strip of an area where I can move about in all directions to get my fitness on, as well as just plain walk around.
Gather Your Gear
Find all the essential workout equipment that you need and put it in on your shopping list. My favorites are a set of dumbbells and resistance bands both large and small ones. Both are easy to store and can be used for a variety of exercises.
Create a Storage Game Plan
Declutter your space and find a small area where you can store your workout gear. My favorite is to use storage cubes. I dedicate a storage cube to all of my workout equipment.
Modify Your Workouts
Don’t be afraid of modifying your workouts to make it work within the space that you have or training in a different style depending on the space that you have on hand. Doing an intense kickboxing workout in my room just would not work. However, step-ups on a chair or static lunges next to a wall? Sure.
Big city living comes with its compromises, but it doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice a good workout, especially while in quarantine. With a few modifications and finding what is really essential to getting in a good workout for you, you can make a small space work.
